A fort, a caiman and a jaguar footprint

El Castillo on the San Juan river has to be one of the highlights of this trip.  Only accessible by boat and on the edge of a UNESCO biological reserve, the town runs along the river and has the fortress above it.

I came here  after two Swiss chaps recommended it- and the Victoria Hotel.

Some of us did a three hour jungle hike squelching through the mud. Our guide pointed out poison frogs,  jaguar prints,  medicinal plants, leafcutter ants and a multitude of birds.

We did the night tour under a zillion stars, looking for a caiman and when our guide found one,  we all got the chance to hold it. Our guide could spot a creature from the boat and found us a lizard, and frogs,  one little fella was seven colours and tiny.
