Leafcutter ants; the farmers

I find the leafcutter ants fascinating. Not only do they cut and transport large (comparatively) leaves down their superhighways, they have special cleaning ants on the leaves to stop bacteria getting in their nests that would destroy the farm. That’s right. They do something to the leaves and leave them in a dedicated room in their construction to create fungus to feed the larvae.

These ants were on the road near my accommodation.
